For the third consecutive year, Muscat is to play host to the opening of one of the worlds most adrenalin fueled sailing events – the Extreme Sailing Series. Two teams will represent the Sultanate of Oman – Oman Air and The Wave, Muscat, who will take on the very best of international sailing talent as they battle to be crowned Extreme Sailing Series, Muscat Champions.

The event takes place between the 28 February – 2 March, and eight international teams with 40 of the world’s best sailors, including Olympians, World Champions and round the world sailors will compete.

New for this year, the teams will sail with five full time crewmembers, as opposed to four in previous years. This gives the chance for an amateur, a women or youth sailor to race alongside the more experienced crewmembers, and learn about sailing at one of the highest levels.

Omani sailor, Nasser al Mashari, returns for his second year as Bowman on Oman Air, making him the most experienced Omani sailor in the fleet. Making his international debut this year is Hashim Al Rashidi, who will take the role previously filled by Khamis Al Anbouri as Bowman on The Wave, Muscat. Hashim commented:

“It is a great honour to be sailing with The Wave, Muscat for the Series. Right now I am focused on training for the first event, which will take place in my home country. I am excited about being able to sail in front of the my friends and family, and I hope we can make the crowds cheer for us.”

With racing taking place just off the beach at INSERT BEACH NAME, the public will have front row seats to all the action, where they can come and support their national teams. In addition to the Extreme Sailing Series, there will be a host of family entertainment with a range of fun on and off-the-water activities, shows and entertainment in the public village, which will be open from the 29 February-2 March, from 11am-6pm everyday.

Football Tournament – Oman Sail will once again host a football tournament, which is open to all local teams. The tournament, which is supported by the Oman Football Association, has already attracted huge interested, with 128 teams registered, compared to 71 in 2011! 10 players per team will compete and all matches will be organized on a professional level, giving teams the opportunity to showcase their talents. And if that isn’t enough incentive, there is OMR 1500 in prize money up for grabs. Matches take place between 1400 hours and 2000 hours so why not come down and show your support to the teams!

Try Sailing – Why not get out on the water and give sailing a go for yourself! Oman Sail will be offering trial sessions in the afternoons on March 1st and 2nd. Register at the venue as space? is limited.

Porsche Kids Driving School? – Oman Sail invite you and your family for an afternoon of fun and excitement. Children between the ages of 3 – 9 years will have the chance to ride in mini Porsche cars around a custom built city. Enjoy the ride of your life!

Oman Sail are very pleased to announce that Salah Al Zidjali, one of Oman’s most popular singers, will officially close the Extreme Sailing Series Muscat with a free concert to the crowds, before and after racing.

The Extreme Sailing Series is a unique concept, pitting some of the very best professional sailing teams in the world against each other on identical Extreme 40 catamarans, close to shore to provide spectacular entertainment for the public. The 2012 Series will visit eight venues between now and December before the overall Series champion is decided at the final event in Brazil. Oman Sail won the Extreme Sailing Series in both 2009 and 2010, and are be looking to reclaim the crown for the 2012 Series.
