Gold and Silver fleets sparkle at RS:X World Championships in Oman as France and Poland lead the field in Fleet Final Series

The RS:X World Windsurfing Championships in Mussanah, Oman delivered another cracking day of competition for opening races of the Final Series. Winds that reached 13 kts mid afternoon for the Men’s racing was enough to create thrilling speeds both upwind and down and impressive tactical racing. With the newly formed Gold and Silver fleets – determined by rankings from the Qualifying Series earlier in the week – and the fact that for many countries, and sailors, this event acts as an Olympic qualifier, competition really intensified today.

The RS:X World Windsurfing Championships in Mussanah, Oman, got off to a spectacular start today with all six scheduled races completed in 10-11 knots of breeze. Racing for the 145 athletes is split into two fleets – men and women – and each fleet has a Blue and Yellow group selected according to daily rankings. Each group contests three races per day in the opening qualifying rounds.

The world’s top-ranked windsurfers will descend on Al Mussanah Sports City, Oman, in October for the 2015 RS:X World Windsurfing Championships, the final major meeting before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016. Two years after Oman received worldwide acclaim for hosting the Laser World Championships, the Millennium Resort Mussanah will once again be buzzing with international sailing talent and important dignitaries.
