Inshore Race Team: Nasser Al Mashari

< Back to team profiles

Nasser joined Oman Sail with a heritage of his own- he was a national swimmer for the youth team and had enjoyed success at that high level. This natural athleticism was an immediate asset to the team as he had incredible upper body strength and core fitness. He had also been sailing before and shoed a natural ability on a boat.

After spending a short time with the Oman Sailing School as an instructor he was whisked away to fill an empty slot as 5th Man on the Extreme 40, Renaissance, during the iShares Cup (now the Extreme Sailing Series Europe). This was a real trial-by-fire for him as he was suddenly on the world stage on a boat with professional sailors who had been sailing together for a long time. After intensive training in the UK on the Extreme 40 he excelled on the boat and was promoted to full-time bowman on the boat for the Extreme Sailing Series Asia.

Hong Kong saw his debut as permanent bowman and he continued in the position in Singapore and on to the finale held in Oman. His hard work paid off as he stood on the top step of the podium alongside his colleague Khamis Al Anbouri who was on the second step.

In early 2010 he was chosen to continue on the Extreme 40 but to also compete on the Farr 30 yacht in the annual Tour de France a la Voile. This gruelling race lasted for a month and also meant a great deal of training.

For the 2011 Global Extreme Sailing Series Nasser was promoted to full time bowman on Oman Air Masirah.
