Musannah
On 27th Feb 2011, Oman Sail inaugurated its second Sailing School at Musannah Sports City. Twelve students from Al Khalil bin Ahmed Al Frahidi School joined the sailing school in its official inauguration and to start their sailing class. The students registered to train twice a week when they will be learning the basic skill of sailing and will continue to complete their three level course that will then enable them to sail independently with little supervision.
The training will be supervised by senior instructor, and head of the Musannah Sailing School, Mohammed Al Balushi, along with eight professional Omani instructors who have recently completed their instructor course from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) in the UK. The establishment of the second Sailing School comes as part of Oman Sail’s five year plan of establishing seven Sailing Schools along the coast of Oman by 2015 and with a target of teaching 30,000 Omanis how to sail in that timeframe.
On this occasion, Chief Instructor and head of Musannah Sailing School, Mohammed Al Balushi, commented, “The objective of establishing the Sailing School comes from Oman Sail’s strategy to recruit young Omanis from within the region to join our training programmes and national dinghy squad and make sailing easily accessible to everyone who seeks the opportunity to learn this great sport.“
He added: “Oman Sail is a vehicle to promote the country. In the past three years many people from around the globe learnt about Oman through our participation and achievements in international events. Hence another great aspect of the sailing school is that it enables us to create strategic commercial partnerships with the local hotels and resorts of Oman, enabling us to make sailing more accessible to tourists visiting Oman.”
Mr Issa Al Mjiani, student group supervisor at Al Khalil bin Ahmed Al Frahidi School praised Oman Sail’s efforts in rekindling Oman’s rich maritime heritage and the development of students’ leadership skills and both individual and teamwork skills that they gain from sailing. Mr Issa ensured that the school will double the number of students in their next batch of Try Sailing and will continue to encourage more students to sail.
