Concept
Up until 15 years ago, no one had ever completed a non-stop round-the-world journey aboard a sailing multihull, and still today, it remains the hardest challenge a sailor can ever dream of tackling. Fewer than 20 boats have succeeded and one of the most famous of them all, Ellen MacArthur's former B&Q trimaran, is now about to set off around the planet once more, this time under her new name Musandam and flying the colours of the Sultanate of Oman...
The Course
Musandam's crew, setting off in January 2009, will include the first Omanis to sail around the world. To tackle that challenge, they have chosen the hard way, aiming to master one of the world's fastest but also trickiest sailing racers...
The Crew
The crew attempting the first Omani Round the World sailing adventure; Loik Gallon, Mohsin Al Busaidi, Charles Darbyshire, Thierry Duprey Du Vorsent, and Nick Houchin...
The Boat
Musandam, formerly Dame Ellen MacArthur's world record breaking B&Q/ Castorama, is the Sultanate of Oman's flagship sailing boat. She was launched in 2004 , having been built by Boatspeed of Australia, and designed by Nigel Irens and Benoit Cabaret, with the assistance of structural engineer John Levell. Musandam has undergone a minor refit to enable a maximum crew of 5 to live on board and sail her. Oman has chosen to retain the original rig which is, in effect, that of a grand-prix racing ORMA 60, on a 75 foot hull.
Life on board
The Trimaran crew looks back on their four week adventure sailing Musandum from Cowes, UK to Muscat, Oman, and give an insight in to what life is like onboard the trimaran...
