Summer Sailing Program

Oman Sail began taking in applications from school children interested in taking part in the summer program to be held at the Sailing Schools at Marina Bandr Al Rawdha (MBR) and Musannah Sport City. The program commences on 1st June and extends to the end of July 2011. the event is sponsored by BAE Systems, Nawras and Renaissance Services, one of Oman Sail's key sponsors in the training and development of young Omanis in sailing.

The program provides a unique opportunity for school children to attend try sailing sessions, a sport which is not only fun and recreational but also teaches children a wide range of skills from confidence building to team work and problem solving. Both girls and boys aged 8 to 16 years old will take upon a one week try sailing course. Only 20 students will be accepted for each week on the basis of first come first served. The program also includes theoretical lecturing and practical exercises specially designed to provide maximum knowledge and entertainment for the children as well as a sense of competitiveness and a learning experience of essential life skills.
Summer Sailing Camp objectives :
Ali Al Shihaimi, a senior instructor at Marina Bandar Al Rawda Sailing school describes this camp as an opportunity for the children to spend their summer vacation in an interesting and fruitful environment. The program also provides students with back ground knowledge on Oman's glorious maritime history and the achievements of their Omani grandfathers who sailed the world for trading and friendship purposes sharing a message of goodwill while representing the Islamic and Omani culture and traditions.
At the end of the Summer Camp, the best and most talented contenders will be selected to join the Sailing School where they will be trained and nurtured as young sailors, gearing up to represent Oman in international races and regattas.
How to register?
Interested school children may visit or contact Oman Sail's HQ at The Wave, Muscat to register. Oman Sail anticipates to enroll more than 300 school children in this Summer Camp in both Sailing Schools, the first twenty to register will commence their training in June.
The training
The program, Al Shuhaimi asserts, will run for four days a week from Saturday to Tuesday. The students will train for two hours in the morning between 10 and 12 AM and another two hours from 1 to 3 pm in the afternoon. The training will also include lectures on safety, rigging and use of robes.
Instructors:
Oman Sail has appointed internationally certified and qualified Omani instructors to conduct and supervise the program. The Marina Bandar Al Rawda School is run by Captain Saleh Al Jabri supported by Chied Instructor Ali Ambusaidi as well as eight other qualified instructors where as the Musannah Sailing School is run by Senior instructor Mohammed Al Bulushi along with eight qualified Omani instructors. Some of those instructors still remember the days when they were trainees at the Sailing School with their mixed emotions of hard work and joy. As instructors they now acknowledge the importance of encouraging children to do their best, help each other and strictly follow the safety instructions in order for a fruitful and enriching experience.
