Omani Sailors To Asian Championship

Two of Oman’s top national dinghy sailors, Ahmed Al-Wahaibi and Hussain Al-Jabri, are currently in Langkawi, Malaysia for two of the biggest dinghy events on the Malaysian sailig calendar. The duo have just finished the KFC Regatta, which took place in Langkawi, Malaysia, and forms a crucial part of the teams training for the forthcoming Asian Sailing Championships, where they will be challenging for Championship glory.
Ahmed Al-Wahaibi finished fourth in seven boat fleet securing three seconds places throughout the event, while Hussain Al-Jabri finished seventh.

The KFC Regatta provides a good training ground for the sailors, allowing them to test themselves against some of the competitors who will challenge them in the Asian Sailing Championships, when racing gets underway from the 16 - 25 February. The event also allows the teams to familiarize themselves with the racecourse, and is clear from the KFC Regatta that the competition for the Asian Sailing Championship titles will be hard fought.

Teams from 24 nations in Asia will gather in Langkawi, Malaysia ready to do battle across 14 classes of boat for the Asian Championship titles. In addition to Oman’s Laser sailors, the Hobie 16 pairings of Musab Al-Hadi/Ahmed Al-balushi, and Akram Al-wahaibi/Abrulrahman Al-mashari will also compete in the Asian Sailing Championships in the double-handed catamaran.
Closer to home, 12 sailors representing Oman started their campaign for glory at the 20th edition of the Qatar International Regatta (Sail the Gulf -2012), which takes from the 12 -15 February. Three of Oman’s Hobie 16 pairings will compete in the event, and two sailors will take on the extremely competitive Laser Standard class.

The event also provides a prefect training ground for Oman Sail’s youth sailors, - Nasser Al-ruzeiqi and Mohammed Al-wahaibi (Hobie 16), and Mohammed Al-mashari (Laser standard) – to gain experience of competing in international events, against some of the regions top sailors. The experience gained will be invaluable in developing the skills of the sailors within a competitive environment, and is an essential part of the Oman Sail’s vision to have a sailing team capable of competing in the 2020 Olympic games.

Please see below the full list of competing sailors.
