Gold and Silver for Oman Sail in Qatar

Oman's national dinghy squad dominated the Hobie16 catamaran class in the 2011 Sail Qatar Regatta this week, claiming the top two positions after four days of intense competition. Musab Al Hadi and his crew Ahmed al Bulushi secured the gold, while their teammates Akram al Wihaibi and Abdul Rahman Al Mashari will bring the silver medal back to Oman.
More than 140 sailors descended on Doha Bay in Qatar for the sixth edition of the Sail Qatar Regatta, from various Arab and international countries, including sailors from as far afield as Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, Iran, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Kyrigstan, and the Netherlands, as well as sailors from the GCC, including the hosting country Qatar.
The Omani teams have led the Hobie16 fleet since day one, and their performance never faltered, securing an impressive string of results for the winning duo, Musab Al Hadi and his crew Ahmed al Bulushi.
The sailors have competed across six different dinghy classes this week on Doha Bay, including the Optimist, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, 470s Laser Standard and the Hobie16.
Oman’s National Sailing Team Manager, Rashid Ibrahim Al-Kindi, praised the performance of the Omani sailors. “There was strong competition amongst all teams in this year. Our stars shined with their performance showing great skill on the water and keeping a clear focus on every little detail of the race. We expected them to perform well in this event and they have achieved what we set out to achieve. This is the result of all the hard work and training that the team has had since the beginning of the year.”
“I would like to thank the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation for organising a great event. It had been a great event for us and we look forward to achieving the same in December.”
The national dinghy squad will now return to Oman to resume training at Mussanah Marina, in preparation for the forthcoming Arab Games which will be held in December in Qatar. The squad has high expectations from the Arab Games, and will be looking to add more medals to their tally.
