Oman Laser stars participate in the third GCC Sailing Championship in Bahrain

The third GCC sailing championship started yesterday (24 June) with the participation of Sultanate of Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE and host country: Kingdom of Bahrain. The championship was organized by the GCC Sailing Federation headed by Sheikh Khalifa Al Khalifa who inaugurated the opening ceremony before the start of the race. During the ceremony Sheikh Khalifa greeted all participants and their team thanking their contribution and participation in the event. “We would like to welcome all our brothers and gusts today who have joined us to be part of the third GCC Sailing Championship in Bahrain. This event is a great opportunity to bring all sailing enthusiasts from within the GCC together. We are now celebrating the successful launch of the third edition of the Sailing Championship, as sailing is becoming one of the fastest developing sports our region.“

He added ”This event is the result of unified efforts put by all GCC sports committees and federations together and we thank God Almighty for blessing us with a great beautiful coastline and infrastructure to host such events. And we strive to continue developing this sport and to support the development of GCC sailors in the GCC states while we also highlight our commitment to keep our beautiful beaches sea clean where we can all enjoy an environmental friendly sport and see the fresh winds continue to fill the sails of our future GCC sailing champions. I wish all the sailors the best of luck and safe winds.”
Representing Oman’s senior Laser sailors are Musab Al Hadi and Ahmed Al Wahaibi in the Laser Radial class, and Ahmed Al Mashari in the Laser Standard Class. Also representing the Oman team is the national youth team
that are participating in their first ever GCC regatta. Both Yarab Al Jabri and Mohamed Al Mashari have been training with Oman Sailing School for almost a year and have shown some great skill in various local events
including the School regatta and Mussanah Race week that took place early this year in Musannah Sport City.
The team will be competing with 26 other sailors from the GCC in a 3 day race (during 24-26 June 2011) that is set to provide a great platform for the future of sailing in the GCC and witness the potential of some of the
young ambitious GCC sailors who like their forefather aim to become great sailors as they contribute to rekindling the rich maritime heritage associated with this region.
