Representing the Sultanate in the Open Catamaran fleet were Suliman Al Wahaibi and Abdullatif Al Wahaibi, fresh from their win at the 2009 Bahwan DHL Oman Hobie 16 Youth Sailing Championships. With nineteen entrants in the class, competition was stiff but the crew sailed consistently all weekend to finish the regatta at the top of the Hobie 16 class.
The BAE Systems sponsored Laser Radial Team members also traveled to Dubai for the event. Musab Al Hadi again demonstrated that he is one of the best sailors in Oman. After a difficult first day due to sailing with a malfunctioning steering system, he ended up winning the last race by a substantial margin. This result pushed him up to finish third overall in the multi-national fleet, just in front of his fellow Omani, Assad Al Hooti in fifth.
Corky Rhodes, Oman Sail’s Head Coach commented “I’m delighted with the Squad’s success in this regatta. We have set ourselves the ambitious target of medaling at the Asian Beach Games and a good start to the year was critical. This year the team will carry on to gain more experience at racing on a international stage and improve their race tactics on the sailing course”.
Once the squad arrives back in Oman, preparations will begin for the “Sail the Gulf Regatta” in Qatar that commences on the 16th February. The event will be extremely competitive, but the Oman Sail National Sailing Team are already feeling confident of success both there and at the Asian Beach Games being hosted in Muscat in December.
Oman Sail National Sailing Squad Succeed in Dubai
The Oman Sail National Sailing Team returned from Dubai today following a successful weekend of racing at the Jumeirah Regatta. The regatta, one of the highlights of the UAE sailing calendar, attracted international competitors and the competition was tough. Conditions for the fleets were challenging, with unpredictable light winds coupled with a choppy sea state.
